Organic agriculture is an alternative method of production which aims to protect the damaged natural balance with wrong proceeding methods in the agricultural production. With this method, output and quality countinuation is provided without using GMO (organisms which were genetically changed), growing materials, drugs, and artificial fertilizer.
Organic agriculture means; to protect next generations, to be protected from negative effects of chemicals on people, environment and animals, to provide farming equilibrium for a long time with the natural ways considering ecological conditions, to prevent the erosion of the source of genetic and soil, to keep the quality of water and quantity, to use eatable sources of energy and to save energy, to protect the producer and the agriculture workers’ health, to provide the security of small farmers by increasing their income, to support economy, to provide a nutritious and high quality product.
Organic agriculture (biological, ecological farming): is an agricultural method which aims to establish natural equlibrium that was lost with the wrong usage of chemicals and the syntetic chemicals in the ecological system. It is a kind of production method which is not harmful for people and environment. Organic agriculture is not an “alternative farming” method. It is an application of traditional farming with nowadays technology and conditions. Conventional agriculture can be called “synthetic chemical farming”. IPM, alternative, and developed farming methods can not be mentioned as organic agriculture. These kinds of methods take the usage of sythentetic chemicals under control, but the organic agriculture method don’t use those at all.
Development of Organic Agriculture
In Europe, it was started to use in 1910s, but controlled production became widespread in 1930s. Denmark, England, and Swetzerland were the countries that used biological farming in Europe. By 1970s, it became more important for trading areas. In 1972, “International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements” was founded in Germany. IFOAM's mission is leading, uniting and assisting the organic movement in its full diversity. Their goal is the worldwide adoption of ecologically, socially and economically sound systems that are based on the principles of Organic Agriculture. In our country Organic agriculture was started in 1984-85 with the request of companies which have European origin. In 1992 “The foundation of Ecological Agriculture organization” was founded in Turkey, too. European Union published its first organic product regulations on June 24, 1991. These regulations used to contain only vegetal products. Later on, the new regulations which contain animal product were published on August 24, 2000. The regulations which are about “Producing of vegetal and animal products with ecological methods” on December 18, 1994, and “The principles and application of organic agriculture” came into operation on July 11, 2002. When classified region by region, Aegan 39%, Mediterennian 24%, Middle Anatolia 11% have production rates.
